We Hope Meet and Confer Won’t be Ruined Again - Circa 2004

We Hope Meet & Confer Won’t be Ruined Again

In 2004, we were so close to having Meet and Confer, however, it was ruined by the “other organization”.  View the video BY CLICKING HERE to see what happened during the council’s study session.  The process was literally hackjacked at the last minute. Due to this split by the other organization going back on it’s agreements and fearing an election, it put its interest ahead of what’s in the best interest of sworn Officers. Its important people remember history so it doesn’t repeat itself.

Important Meet and Confer

November 16, 2009, the Mesa City Council adopted a Meet and Confer policy for sworn Officers. MPA has pushed for this decades and finally, it has arrived.

What does it means?

·         Protection for you and your family’s benefits and pay.

·         Reasonable working conditions.

·         A memorandum of understanding serving as a contract.

·         Better accountability of management.

·         One police organization representing you.

How it will work?

In essence, we need you to vote for MPA twice. The first time will be a signature card for MPA to qualify to be a candidate and the final actual vote will require you to cast a ballot in person. MPA needs your participation in both to represent you. The election will occur as follows:

You will receive a petition signature card in your department inter-office mailbox. Place a check mark voting for Mesa Police Association to represent you, sign and date it. Place it into one of the ballot boxes at your station or work site.

When the MPA receives 30 % of sworn Officers/Sergeants signature cards, this qualifies MPA to request the City Manager to hold an election.

The City Manager will declare an election. Officers must physically go down to the City Clerk’s Office while off-duty or on break, show your ID and cast a voting ballot for the MPA. 60% of the total number of sworn Officers/Sergeants must cast a vote for the election results to count.

The group receiving the majority of votes (if 60% is reached) will be declared the representative of Sworn Officer/Sergeants.
These are the important dates:

Petition Process:

November 30, 2009 (Monday) = First Day of Signature Card Collection
February 1, 2010 (Monday) = Signature Cards are due
February 1-4, 2010 = Signatures are verified (30% must be achieved)
February 4, 2010 (Thursday) City Manager Orders Election to Begin

In Person Election:
March 8-18, 2010 (Two weeks of early voting)
***Note: 8 at City Clerk’s Office 20 E Main. 2 days will be done at East Valley Library***
March 23, 2009 = Election Day
March 24-29, 2010 = Process Ballots
March 31, 2010 (Wednesday) City Manger Transmits and advises groups of results.

Please, support the MPA. We need your support to be able to continue to provide you and your family with the best legal and labor protection.  Vote MPA.

Gilbert Days Parade

Monday, November 16th, 2009

It is important to recognize our neighboring communities that support our department, or even the cities our officers live in.  The MPA had a magnificent float in the Gilbert Days Parade that received an overwhelming amount of cheers from the crowd.  Thanks to our float extraordinaires, G. Bake and E. Farrugia, the MPA was able to go down the parade in style!dsc00992.JPG

Violence Against Women and The Increase in Pack Rapes

Society continues the investigation of the issue of gang rape and rape culture with a panel of top experts on violent crimes against women. We’ll examine the mentality of males that would willingly participate in such a vicious crime, as well as reasons why males are recording these events on video, laughing about the rape, and refusing to intervene on behalf of the victim.

Is this truly what our society has become? Where do we go from here?

Det. Kurt Scanio participated in this national radio show to help educate the public on the ongoing issues law enforcement are faced with domestic violence.
